What is Sagishima Art Gallery?

An Island Art Hub You Can Only Reach by Ferry

Sagishima Art Gallery is a unique art space located on Sagishima, a small island in Mihara City, Hiroshima, Japan. It is one of the few art galleries in the world that can only be reached by ferry.

Originally, this space was nothing more than an abandoned shipping container. But with passion and vision, the members of FOMUS led the effort to repair and transform it—by hand—into a gallery full of life and creativity. Supported by the local community, they slowly and carefully brought the space back to life.

This is not a static gallery. It’s a living, evolving art space, co-created with every visitor.

Why Create an Art Gallery on This Island?

In today’s world, advanced technology like social media and AI makes it seem easy to “connect.”

But we believe that real human connection—face to face, sharing the same air, beyond words—is what truly matters.

Sagishima is a place of calm, surrounded by the sea and rich nature. It’s a place where time flows gently, allowing people to truly meet, talk, and connect.

That’s why we chose this island to create a new kind of gathering place, where people from all over the world can come together through art.

Where Tradition Meets Contemporary Expression

Inside the gallery, you’ll find works that reflect the beauty of Japanese tradition—like the Masu Wall, created using traditional wooden “masu” cups, and delicate Haku Art made with metallic foil techniques.

These pieces reflect the FOMUS philosophy of honoring and sharing the quiet power of Japanese “wa” (harmony and tradition).

Artists and travelers from around the world come here to paint walls, join workshops, and engage naturally with local residents. Every interaction becomes a cultural exchange.

Our Vision for the Gallery

Sagishima Art Gallery is more than just a place to view artwork.

It’s a space where Japan and the world, local residents and global visitors, tradition and the future all intersect—and where new values are born through those connections.

Because it takes time and effort to get here, each encounter becomes more meaningful.

That’s why we believe that in this so-called “convenient” world, there is deeper richness in slowness, in hands-on creation, and in traditions passed down through generations.

The Sagishima Ceiling Art Project

One Sky, Many Cultures – A Collaborative Artwork for Peace

In 2025–2026, Sagishima Art Gallery will begin a global art project to create a massive collaborative ceiling painting—a symbolic piece connecting people, cultures, and hope from around the world.

This will not be a work by a single artist.

Instead, we are inviting people of all ages, nationalities, and backgrounds to contribute their ideas and inspirations for a single artwork painted across the ceiling of the gallery.
